Mother's Day Concert: The Zefiro Vocal Ensemble

Join us on Sunday, May 11, 2014, when the Zefiro Vocal Ensemble will perform a special Mother’s Day concert at the BSCC. This talented group will sing the rarely performed Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday by Carlo Gesualdo di Venosa (1566-1613), among the most experimental and expressive music written in the Renaissance.

Completed just two years before his death as he remained tortured by the guilt of his wife’s murder by his own hand, Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories are among the most experimental and expressive music written in the Renaissance. This program is not Zefiro’s first foray into the darkness of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories. In 2009 Zefiro first performed his Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday and from that moment onward was hooked and considers this program a follow up to that series five years ago.

Founded in 2008, the Boston- and Providence-based Zefiro Vocal Ensemble is grounded in the style of Renaissance a capella sacred music and has used this sound as a foundation for singing music from medieval times to the present. Zefiro’s credits include collaborating with Boston composer Kurt Leland to premiere a major work entitled On Love; winning a project grant from the Somerville Arts Council, chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and National Endowment for the Arts; and performing as part of the Boston SoHIP (Society of Historically Informed Performance) Summer Concert Series for four years.
